DEBATE: Have the Labour splitters helped the Conservative party?

first_img DEBATE: Have the Labour splitters helped the Conservative party? whatsapp Tuesday 19 February 2019 8:06 am Thanks to this lack of support, the campaign for a second referendum had appeared to be fizzling out. But yesterday’s resignations changed all that. No longer shackled to Labour, Luciana Berger and Chuka Umunna – politicians with star-quality, and passionate Remainers to boot – can devote all their time and energy to whipping up parliamentary support for another vote. And that is very bad news indeed for our beleaguered Prime Minister. City A.M.’s opinion pages are a place for thought-provoking views and debate. These views are not necessarily shared by City A.M. The seven Labour splitters have denounced the modern Labour party as bullies, antisemites, and effectively lacking the ability to run a bath, let alone a country. In so doing, they have provided the language with which the Tories will fight the next election.Furthermore, this new movement has yet to create the party apparatus that would be required for it to be a credible electoral challenger. It is conceivable that this may follow in time, and in the meantime members of the “Independent Group” may have some limited success in certain metropolitan seats. But I doubt their ability to split votes from the Conservatives at the same rate as they will inevitably do so from Labour. This new movement, therefore, just reinforces the argument that the only way to avoid a racist, incompetent government run by Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour party is to vote Conservative.Olivia Utley, deputy editor at TheArticle, says NO.In normal times, a dramatic and well-publicised split in the Labour party would be excellent news for the Conservatives. But we are not living in normal times. The raison d’etre of Theresa May’s Conservative government is to deliver the result of the referendum in some shape or form. As leader of the opposition, many expected Jeremy Corbyn to do everything in his power to impede the Prime Minister on this mission. But, to the consternation of many Labour activists and MPs, the old-school eurosceptic has refused point-blank to throw his weight behind a so-called “people’s vote”. Have the Labour splitters helped the Conservative party?Lauren McEvatt, managing director at Morpeth Consulting, says YES.After the next election, the UK government will either be run by the Labour party or the Tory party. That’s the reality of the electoral system. Sex Shop Workers from Across the City Reveal What Angelenos Are…

first_imgLoveSex & DatingTo Love & Date in L.A.Sex Shop Workers from Across the City Reveal What Angelenos Are “Into”From dildos in Santa Monica to leather harnesses in Silver Lake, a survey of the city’s adult toy stores and the proclivities of their clientelesBy Kerry Quinn – July 22, 20194659ShareEmailFacebookTwitterPinterestReddItI was recently in the Pleasure Chest in West Hollywood (every woman has the right to a good vibrator) and spent about an hour wandering around trying to decipher and understand the vast array of products they sell. Ranging from vibrators to dildos to c-rings to an over-the-bed-cross for tying up a partner, I was absolutely amazed by how many products exist, how many products with specific functions I’d never imagined exist, and how sexuality has as many channels as Spectrum Cable’s premium package (and probably even more).I set out to explore four sex shops around Los Angeles to get a better understanding of the sex toys favorited by Angelenos. What are women buying? What are men buying? What are couples buying? Do couples shop together or do people go solo or with their friends? In other words, are people shopping for the pleasure with the people they experience pleasure with or are they searching for supplementary solo fun?I found is that it’s not that simple. As Jake at the Pleasure Chest said, “Everyone has a right to pleasure.” And what that means is as unique as each one of us. Luckily, the adult toy industry is as innovative as the tech industry and they are creating everything our sexy little mind and bodies could imagine (and have yet to imagine.) I’ll admit my mind was spinning and also, reeling from the fact that my exploration up until now has been very vanilla. I felt like a girl who’s only eaten burgers and fries thrust into an international strip mall with hummus, tacos, sushi, rice and beans and hybrids like Kogi.I visited four stores spanning Silver Lake to Santa Monica, each one more different than I expected. I spoke with employees at each location. The interviews have been edited and condensed for length and clarity. The Pleasure Chest, West Hollywoodhttps://www.instagram.com/p/BDpspfjMU65/The Pleasure Chest is located on the eastern side of West Hollywood, so it is certainly LGBTQ friendly but really caters to all. The store is clean, open, and well organized. There are clear sections delineated with many of the softer products (lingerie, penis water bottles, lube) in the front with toys and fetish gear in the back. This is definitely a “one-store-fits-all” kind of vibe. I spoke with Jake, the day manager to learn more. What are your bestselling products? “We sell any range of products from lube to cock rings to vibrators to rainbow things for Pride. We have 50-plus different vibrators, fetish gear, crystal yoni eggs, and bachelorette stuff. Our store is organized by internal, external, vaginal owners, penis owners, couples, and kink. It’s hard to say that this is the bestseller because everyone likes to get off, sex is for everybody and what gets someone off is so personal. We can recommend brands or types of products based on specific needs. We have something for everyone. But toys are the moneymakers. At different times of the year, we have customers looking for different things. For Burning Man, people come in for outfits, lube, condoms, cock rings and hand-held vibrators. For Father’s Day, couples come in to “spice up” the bedroom. There is always some kind of an event that brings in different types of people with different requests.”“We have something for everyone. But toys are the moneymakers.”Do people come in alone or as a couple?“Both. Sometimes if someone is more comfortable they’ll come in and Facetime their partner to show them a product. Or one will scout and then they’ll come back together. Or people come in for themselves. Some send Postmates.”What’s next in sex products?“Virtual reality will be huge.”What’s unique to the Pleasure Chest?“We have a comedy night called Performance Anxiety and get some big names. We also have free classes like butt sex basics, G spot basics, anatomy, consent, pain sex play, needle sex play, fisting classes, shibari and bondage, intimate partner yoga, and lots more.”Notable Products:Blow Job bib, penis water bottle, watermelon flavored Sweeten’d Blow (oral pleasure gel for him), Mr. Thick Dick Penis Enlarger Cream, The Magic Wand (this is modeled after the neck massager Samantha insisted was a vibrator on Sex and The City episode “Critical Condition”), Captain silicone dildo in an array of skin colors, Fetish Fantasy Series Fantasy Swing, and Fat Boy Stretchy Cock Extender.Secret Desires, Santa Monicahttps://www.instagram.com/p/RrCq1OIvRt/Secret Desires is located on an unassuming stretch of Lincoln Boulevard near Ocean Park Boulevard. The exterior has a romance-novel-cover vibe to it. I spoke with Kris, operations manager, who is one of the most knowledgeable people I’ve encountered. Seriously, this guy knows his stuff. What are your bestselling products? “Femme Funn Ultra Bullet Massager in pink and purple and the We Vibe Synch couple vibrator in blue (it looks like Tiffany blue, which is a draw because it reminds women of jewelry). Pink and purple are the best selling colors in toys. These two products make up our top five sellers in different colors.Anal and dildos are our most shopped section. More men are getting comfortable with anal and prostate play.”Do people come in alone or as a couple?“We get a mix of men, women, and couples. Men will come in quickly and buy either head cleaner or pills or they will go to a specific section to buy a toy for a wife or girlfriend. Men shop a specific section and women shop the whole store.” “Men shop a specific section and women shop the whole store.” What’s the most unique product you sell?“The Kink By Doc Johnson Power Banger. It’s a “fucking machine.” It has a rotating head with a lot of angles.” [The website description says, “…this versatile fucking machine offers variable speed to pound your holes at up to 195 strokes per minute.” Side note: this is the ultimate DIY sex product. It reminded me of one of those tennis ball shooting machines you see people use when practicing their tennis game.]What’s unique about L.A. shoppers?“Just like fashion trends are set in bigger cities, toys come here first and then trickle out elsewhere. Christmas is also our biggest season. You’d think it was Valentine’s Day, but that’s actually our second.“Christmas is also our biggest season. You’d think it was Valentine’s Day, but that’s actually our second.”We do a lot of educating. Some women aren’t aware of their own anatomy. There’s also a focus on sexual health and wellness. For example, if a woman is going through cancer treatment and loses sensation, there are toys that are better than others, like those that offer low and deep vibration. It’s really specific, but that’s what helps us find the best products for each person.”Notable Products:Bejeweled butt plugs (every body part deserves bling!), Lush Bluetooth remote control vibrators (used by video cam girls; their customers pay to add vibration to bring them to climax), CalExotics line of vibrators named after Southern California cities, like San Francisco Sweetheart, Santa Monica Starlet and Orange County Cutie, CalExotics street art designed vibrators, Anal-ese (to help, um, grease the wheels and lessen any pain) and China Shrink Cream (to help temporarily tighten a lady’s birth canal), nipple covers and pasties in every color, and seven-inch Pleaser platform heels. The Stockroom, Silver Lakehttps://www.instagram.com/p/Bm3jadsHgMu/I had no idea what to expect from the Stockroom. When I walked into the industrial loft-looking store, I was drawn to the latex clothing. Ranging from dresses to halter tops, it felt like high fashion, but in rubber. (It’s no surprise that they’ve made outfits for Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Kim Kardashian, and Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman suit.) I quickly learned that the Stockroom specializes in BDSM, which stands for bondage, discipline, dominance, and submission. I’ll admit that other than breaking tension by cracking an imaginary whip when I’m being too demanding, I have little to no knowledge of this world. Lucky for me, I spoke with Madame Skin, a dominatrix (!) who was able to give me a great introduction. What are your bestselling products? “Our best sellers are the Tenga stroking products (they are penis masturbators), Bound-O-Round 4 point restraint system (which are restraints that can tie to your toe bedposts), ad the Bondage 101 kit, which includes cuffs for wrists and ankles, rose tickler, riding crop, and blindfold. We also sell a lot of handcuffs and leashes.” [They were all sold out of leashes.]“We also sell a lot of handcuffs and leashes”Do people come in alone or as a couple? We get a mix of people shopping solo and as couples. What are some of your unique products?“Our latex outfits are handmade locally. We also have the Agent Noir Neon Wand, which has various instruments that can stimulate with shocks.” [I got to try this with a few different attachments, including a glass one and a two-pronged silicone piece. It felt a little like static shock, but the knob can be turned up and then it felt like a shock-shock. At the first sign of maybe a possible ache, I run for Advil so this wouldn’t be my pick for any naked activities, but I imagine it would be hot if you’re into pain.]Notable Products:Gags with toilet brushes, ash trays and feather dusters; gag with a real jawbreaker (which reminded me of that 1999 Rose McGowan movie, Jawbreaker); a dildo called Beowulf (which reminded me of that Angelina Jolie movie, 2007 Beowulf); a dragon dildo, (Khalessi! Also, I need to get out more); Electro Kegels, a toy that helps one do their kegels; bunny rabbit hood; fluid-proof sheets; Svakom Trysta Rolling G-Spot Vibe; Lodbrock wooden stock (like you’d see in old Westerns).Rough Trade Gear, Silver Lakehttps://www.instagram.com/p/By6lV4lpIVA/Rough Trade has been in Sunset Junction for 20 years, long before Intelligentsia and hipsters. It’s the only store on this stretch that I hadn’t been in, mostly because I thought it was really geared toward men. I was pleasantly surprised to see that while there is more of a male focus (lots of intimate male on male artwork), there are some products that can be enjoyed by women. I spoke with an employee who preferred I didn’t share his name. What are your bestselling products?“We are known as a leather store so our harnesses are big sellers. We have them in a variety of colors and have expanded to these candy colors. Millennials like them. Our leather uniforms are also big sellers. People who are into leather wear it all year round, no matter how hot it gets.”Can women wear harnesses?“Yes.”Do people come in alone or as a couple?“Both. We had more couples come in after the 50 Shades of Grey movie. More men were interested in exploring anal vibration toys. We sell the Aneros, which stimulates the prostate that can help create more of an ‘explosion.’” “We had more couples come in after the 50 Shades of Grey movie.”What are some of your more unique products? We have items for “Puppy Play,” like a hood that looks like a dog (like Scooby!), a butt plug that mimics a tail and a gag with a bone.Notable Products:Tom of Finland “Tom’s Cock,” which is created from Tom of Finland artwork (it’s 12 inches!). There are also toys called “ball stretchers” where one places their balls through devices for stretching. They vary from a long silicone-looking bar to large metal “nuts” (as in bolts.)So…what are Angelenos into? The fact that these four stores are very distinct, cater to specific audiences and were sold out of a lot of products says a lot about our fair city. We are a mix of cultures and orientations with a universe of desires and options for expressing them. It’s hard to push us into specific categories because we run the gamut to edges on a spectrum that is probably wider than most of America. We are also lucky to live in a place where stores are at the forefront of education and knowledge, brining in the latest and greatest for us to explore. If you are in cancer treatment and want to experience pleasure, there’s not only a toy for it, but an adult store employee who knows which ones would be best. While LA has a lot more of everything under the sun, we are also free to explore our sexuality freely and without judgment.Explore and have funI learned pretty quickly that sex shop employees are some of the most welcoming people you’ll ever meet. I’ll admit I was nervous to ask my questions, figuring they might not want to speak to me. But there’s no shame in these stores. Whatever you’re into it, whatever you want to explore or experience, these employees are your guides. They are excited to help you find pleasure. If you’re curious, this is the safest place to ask your questions. Believe me.RELATED: In L.A., Is the Grocery Store Actually a Good Place to Look for Love?Stay on top of the latest in L.A. food and culture. Sign up for our newsletters today. Lay off the personal attacks on Ed Miliband, Chuka Umunna urges

first_img Show Comments ▼ Lay off the personal attacks on Ed Miliband, Chuka Umunna urges whatsapp Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna pleaded with business leaders to lay off from making personal attacks on Labour leader Ed Miliband as the row between his party and business threatened to spiral out of control. Umunna said recent comments by the Boots chief Stefano Pessina, and then by Stuart Rose, the former chairman of M&S, were personally aimed at his party’s leader. “Business people should contribute to the debate on policy. But recent comments have been very personal and they involve a degree of hyperbole directed at our leader.” “Lots of business people have shown they are capable of debating these things without personalising them,” Umunna added. The growing row between business chiefs and Miliband began on Sunday when the Boots chair Stefano Pessina was quoted as saying that a Labour government under its leader would be catastrophic for the country.  “If they acted as they speak it would be a catastrophe,” Pessina was quoted as saying, sparking a row over whether Labour was anti-business. His words prompted a personal attack from Miliband the following day. The Labour leader said he refused to be lectured by a Monaco-based billionaire. Miliband’s attack has since provoked criticism from Lord Rose, and a host of other business leaders. Brent Hoberman, the internet entrepreneur, last night joined the debate: “Ideally it’s better to attack the team than the person, but in politics you sometimes have to decide where the policy is coming from.” Umunna said that people should pick up the phone to him if they have any issues regarding the party’s policies towards business.  “We were not spoiling for a fight or conflict. In every month of this Parliament we have sought to have a positive and constructive dialogue with business to promote a policy that will help us create wealth creation and growth….I want to build bridges and calm the waters”.  whatsapp Express KCS Tuesday 3 February 2015 9:06 pm Share More From Our Partners Brave 7-Year-old Boy Swims an Hour to Rescue His Dad and Little Sistergoodnewsnetwork.orgFlorida woman allegedly crashes children’s birthday party, rapes teennypost.comAstounding Fossil Discovery in California After Man Looks Closelygoodnewsnetwork.orgKamala Harris keeps list of reporters who don’t ‘understand’ her: reportnypost.comPolice Capture Elusive Tiger Poacher After 20 Years of Pursuing the Huntergoodnewsnetwork.orgSupermodel Anne Vyalitsyna claims income drop, pushes for child supportnypost.comA ProPublica investigation has caused outrage in the U.S. this weekvaluewalk.comRussell Wilson, AOC among many voicing support for Naomi Osakacbsnews.comNative American Tribe Gets Back Sacred Island Taken 160 Years Agogoodnewsnetwork.orgBiden received funds from top Russia lobbyist before Nord Stream 2 giveawaynypost.comMark Eaton, former NBA All-Star, dead at 64nypost.com‘Neighbor from hell’ faces new charges after scaring off home buyersnypost.comI blew off Adam Sandler 22 years ago — and it’s my biggest regretnypost.comKiller drone ‘hunted down a human target’ without being told tonypost.comMatt Gaetz swindled by ‘malicious actors’ in $155K boat sale boondogglenypost.com980-foot skyscraper sways in China, prompting panic and evacuationsnypost.comWhy people are finding dryer sheets in their mailboxesnypost.comInside Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’ not-so-average farmhouse estatenypost.com Tags: Chuka Umunna Peoplelast_img read more

The week ahead: Stocks to face pressure from slowing economic conditions, eurozone turmoil

TSX gets lift from financials, U.S. markets rise to highest since March Toronto stock market dips on weakness in the energy and financials sectors S&P/TSX composite hits highest close since March on strength of financials sector The Toronto market ended last week down another 1.48%. That left the main index down 2.17% from where it started the year, when traders were pleasantly surprised at a run of economic data that came in better than expected, including American job growth that was finally exceeding 200,000 jobs a month. “I think part of the problem is that people got carried away (earlier this year),” said John Johnston, chief strategist at Davis Rea Ltd. “We had a big runup in the markets as economic data surprised on the upside because expectations were too low last October, November. And then expectations came roaring back and we heard people on TV for weeks saying how wonderful everything was getting, same thing they said in 2010, 2011.” Another indication that things are less than wonderful came in on Friday when China released data showing that industrial production rose 9.3% from a year earlier in April, slowing from a nearly 12% increase in March. Markets are getting increasingly hopeful that the U.S. Federal Reserve will ride to the rescue again with a third round of economic stimulus known as quantitative easing. This involves the central bank printing money in order to buy bonds, which helps keep interest rates low and encourages people to buy equities. But Johnston notes that the Fed is going to need more bad data in order to justify another round of easing. “The data will ultimately force the Fed to do that,” he said, but it’s not going to be a matter of the central bank doing so just because the market thinks it’s time to provide another round of stimulus. “In a toxic political environment, it’s going to need clear evidence because (Fed chairman Ben) Bernanke will have to sit down in front of those Republicans and say, ‘we were justified in doing this’. The data will have to be weak enough to create some good anxiety and I don’t know that we are there yet.” The latest round of eurozone turmoil will also weigh on markets this week as it looks increasingly likely that Greece will be forced into another round of elections. Greeks went to the polls May 6 but no party emerged with the strength to form a government. Last-ditch efforts by President Karolos Papoulias to broker a deal between wrangling party leaders ended with no deal in sight late Sunday. State television said talks would continue Monday evening between the heads of the parties that came in the top three spots in the elections. The uncertainty surrounding the debt-plagued country also helped depress commodity prices last week as traders avoided riskier assets and piled into the safe haven status of U.S. Treasuries. It’s now expected that Greeks will have to return to the polls next month. But at the same time, analysts are suggesting that events are accelerating and Greece will ultimately be forced out of the eurozone. Gavin Graham, president of Gavin Investment Strategy, notes that two-thirds of the Greek electorate voted for parties that didn’t vote for the austerity programs that have enabled the country to survive on a series of bailouts. And there seems to be a growing realization that the tough medicine prescribed to Greece hasn’t worked. “Fact is, even after stiffing the bondholders 75%, even after shrinking the economy five per cent and rampant austerity and high unemployment, it’s not working,” Graham said. “The resolution is that Greece and the Club Med countries leave the euro. That’s become the conventional wisdom that the moment Greece goes you have Portugal, Ireland and Spain and probably Italy as well.” On the economic front, traders will take in the latest inflation data from Canada and the U.S. In Canada, economists look for price pressures to ease in Friday’s inflation report despite rising gasoline and home prices, which were up 0.3% in April following a 0.4% gain in March. The American Consumer Price Index is expected to climb 0.1% in April after rising 0.3% in March as gasoline price increases moderate. Also in Canada, the March read on manufacturing sales will be released on Wednesday. Economists expect sales to rise by 0.3% following a similar-sized decline in February, reflecting a slide in exports for a third month in a row. Traders will also look at the latest gauge of the health of the U.S. economy when April retail sales are released Tuesday. Those sales likely rose a by a modest 0.2% in April, the smallest gain so far in 2012. Share this article and your comments with peers on social media Keywords Marketwatch The Toronto stock market looks set for another tepid showing this week with buyers discouraged by data showing further deterioration in economic conditions and rising uncertainty from the eurozone. Market performance is also starting to look eerily similar to 2010 and 2011 when indexes started off strong, only to flag part way through the year. CFA code helps asset managers raise ethical standards

Fiona Collie Keywords Asset management companies,  EthicsCompanies CFA Society Toronto Share this article and your comments with peers on social media Desjardins buys Montreal boutique firm Hexavest One of the things asset management firms can do to raise their ethical standards, according to Dannhauser, is to adopt the CFA Institute’s “Asset Manager Code of Professional Conduct.” The code was first introduced by the CFA Institute in 2005 and focuses on six principles: loyalty to clients, investment process and actions, trading, risk management, compliance and support, performance and valuation and disclosures. Under each of these principles the code offers a more detailed explanation. For example, under the heading of “loyalty to clients” the code outlines that managers must “place client interests before their own” and “preserve the confidentiality of information communicated by clients within the scope of the manager-client relationship.” “It’s all good stuff and sort of easy to say,” said Dannhauser, “the more challenging part, frankly, is in trying to relate these ethical principles to how you actually do business. To make it easier for firms to adopt the code, it is presented as principles and guidelines rather than strict rules. Offering guidance rather than rules, said Dannhauser, makes it easier for the professional standards to be adopted by any type of business model. Currently, about 820 firms have adopted the code worldwide, said Dannhauser. In Canada specifically, about 47 asset manager firms, both large and small, are following the CFA’s principles. Adopting this code of conduct, said Dannhauser, is a proactive way for firms to demonstrate its commitment to professional standards, which helps to strengthen client loyalty and in turn the firm’s bottom line. Another reason to adopt the CFA code, according to Mike Thorfinnson, CAO and chief risk officer, TD Asset Management, who also spoke at the event, is simplicity. Typically when a client asks an asset management firm, particularly a large one, about its code of ethics, said Thorfinnson, managers have to cite numerous policies, which can make things difficult for clients. “Clients can get a bit confused,” he said, “and this code offers an opportunity to simplify what you actually present to clients.” TD Asset Management adopted the CFA’s “Asset Manager Code of Professional Conduct” in April 2012. Related news Asset management firms serious about following a code of ethics and gaining client loyalty and trust need to do more than talk about it, CFA members heard Wednesday at a CFA Society of Toronto event. Parodying a Mark Twain quote, Bob Dannhauser, head of the standards of practice and outreach for the CFA Institute in New York, said: “Everyone always complains about ethics and the lack of ethics in any number of spheres of society, including financial services, but nobody ever really does anything about it.” iA Clarington aims for sleeker, cleaner product lineup CPPIB reports record return for latest fiscal year Facebook LinkedIn Twitter read more

Progress on pay equity for DHB staff

first_imgProgress on pay equity for DHB staff Today’s initial agreement between DHBs and the PSA on pay equity for clerical and administration staff is an important step toward better, fairer pay for this crucial and largely female workforce, Health Minister Andrew Little says.If ratified, the agreement between the Public Service Association and the country’s 20 District Health Boards provides for an immediate pay lift of up to $2500 per annum for thousands of women and some men working in the sector. Detailed work in coming months will result in further pay increases for many.“The Labour Government is actively committed to advancing pay equity – better and fairer pay for workforces largely made up of women,” Andrew Little says.“The DHB clerical and administration workforce makes an important contribution to provision of health services to New Zealanders. It’s unacceptable their work has been undervalued for so long simply because it was predominantly performed by women.“I acknowledge the considerable effort by the PSA and its members and the DHBs to reach the point where we now have a plan to address this unfairness. I wish the DHB workers covered by this pay equity claim well as they consider this agreement,” Andrew Little said.Jan Tinetti says pay equity settlements benefit people who have been underpaid due to systemic sex-based discrimination, and those around them.“Achieving pay equity and putting more money in the hands of the lowest paid workers has a significant positive impact on their lives, and is likely to have flow-on benefits to their whanau and the wider community,” Jan Tinetti says.Today’s announcement is the latest milestone in the Government’s work toward achieving pay equity such as updating the Equal Pay Act to address the gender pay gap. This work also includes record pay settlements for a number of female dominated workforces such as the $173m pay settlement for mental health and addiction support workers.“We still have more to do,” says Jan Tinetti.“That’s why Labour has pledged to make it easier for women to gain pay equity in their organisation or across their industry through increased transparency on pay rates.“Secrecy around pay rates has not served women well in getting fair deals,” Jan Tinetti said. /Public Release.
