Joint audit could inject some competition into the market

We will be pleased to play our part in the ongoing debate on how best to achieve these goals. There is a momentum for change, and the current sense of urgency must not be lost.Public trust in the financial state of the UK’s leading companies is at stake. Joint audits can and should be part of the solution. City A.M.’s opinion pages are a place for thought-provoking views and debate. These views are not necessarily shared by City A.M. There is broad consensus that the audit model for the largest companies is currently not fit for purpose. High-profile corporate failures such as Carillion have brought what was once considered a rather technical subject into the spotlight, and there is political will to drive through change. The CMA has concluded that the overwhelming concentration in the listed audit market, where the Big Four accountancy firms audit 99 per cent of the FTSE 100, poses significant threats to audit quality.Competition and quality in the audit market are inseparable. It is widely accepted that addressing the long-standing levels of concentration would raise quality, increase market resilience, and help meet the evolving needs of all stakeholders, including those of wider society. However, while there is broad agreement over what needs to happen, there are multiple opinions on how we get there. A range of solutions have been suggested, from a market cap to a split between audit and advisory businesses. At the centre of the CMA’s reform package is the idea of mandatory joint audit in the FTSE 350, with at least one of the auditors being from a challenger firm. Joint audit could inject some competition into the market The idea would be for each auditor to undertake a live review of the other’s work before arriving at a joint opinion on the accounts. This would increase levels of scepticism, improving the quality of corporate reporting, provide diverse expertise to assess the most complex issues, and enable regular rotation of work, which would reduce over-familiarity.Crucially, joint audit would unlock the energy and innovation associated with new participants in a market. It is a tried and tested way of reducing concentration, enabling smaller firms to gain experience and grow. In France, where it has been required for many years, concentration is less pronounced than in any other major economy.Despite these benefits, mandatory joint audit looks set to attract stiff resistance from some quarters. The opposition will focus in part on supposed cost increases, but analysis of the top listed companies in France compared to their UK counterparts shows no substantial evidence for the alarming claims made by some parties. by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeBetterBe20 Stunning Female AthletesBetterBeMisterStoryWoman Files For Divorce After Seeing This Photo – Can You See Why?MisterStoryZen HeraldEllen Got A Little Too Personal With Blake Shelton, So He Said ThisZen HeraldMoneyPailShe Was A Star, Now She Works In ScottsdaleMoneyPailmoneycougar.comDiana’s Butler Reveals Why Harry Really Married Meghanmoneycougar.comTotal PastJohn Wick Stuntman Reveals The Truth About Keanu ReevesTotal PastNoteableyFaith Hill’s Daughter Is Probably The Prettiest Woman In The WorldNoteableybonvoyaged.comTotal Jerks: These Stars Are Horrible People.bonvoyaged.comPaws ZillaLily From The AT&T Ads Is Causing A Stir For One ReasonPaws Zilla Tags: Carillion Companylast_img read more

Hackney voting issues: Registration problems leave at least 100 residents unable to vote as polls open on day of General Election

first_img whatsapp Hackney voting issues: Registration problems leave at least 100 residents unable to vote as polls open on day of General Election Thursday 7 May 2015 9:13 am Share A technical error with the government’s new online voter registration system has left at least a hundred residents in Hackney unable to vote as polls opened this morning, despite registering on time. Many more who completed their registration before the 20 April cut-off date, but were not registered due to a backlog, were left unable to vote at all in today’s closely-called election. https://twitter.com/JackPressedOn/status/596378385762377729Hackney Council downplayed reports that thousands of potential voters had been affected – however the technical issue, which created a backlog in voter registration, means many people could turn up to vote at polling stations in the borough after work this evening to discover they aren’t registered.Of the hundred-odd people Hackney council are aware of who had issues, the local authority said around 60 have now been dealt with and are able to vote. Another 40 are still being dealt with. READ: Diane Abbott calls Hackney voting chaos “a disgrace”Some of these residents, who should have been contacted to provide further details of their identity between registering and polling day today – but were not – may now be unable to cast their vote. The new online voter registration system is run by the cabinet office. After voters register their details, they are sent to local authorities which match the information with that held by the department for work and pensions (DWP) for verification. In some instances where the information does not match, for example a change of name, people are asked to provide proof of identity through a passport or other documents.A spokesperson for the cabinet office told City A.M. it was aware of the situation and is working with Hackney to resolve the “small number” of cases.”Our priority is resolving the issue for those affected.”The government department would not comment on when the issue had first come to its attention.A Hackney council spokesperson told added that it believes at this stage an IT problem caused voters to appear as not registered and also for registrations made before the April deadline not to come through until last night. The backlog has also caused delays in polling cards being sent to registered voters. While a polling card is not necessary to cast a vote in the election, there could be many more residents in the area who turn up to polling stations after work and into the evening without a polling card to find they are in fact not registered. The issue has also affected up to 3,000 people who applied to vote by post, leaving even more residents unable to cast their vote, the Hackney Gazette reported. The council told City A.M. it is working on getting voters’ registrations completed up until the polls close at 10pm tonight, and had drafted in additional staff to help. The Electoral Commission, the independent body which oversees election standards, has been made aware of and was monitoring the situation. It is responsible for publishing a post-election report on how the election process is run with the ability to make recommendations to government.Hackney has two constituencies, Hackney North and Stoke Newington, and Hackney South and Shoreditch, both of which are held by Labour.Long-standing MP Diane Abbott, who is seeking re-election in Hackney North and Stoke Newington slammed the council a disgrace over the chaos. The city is continuing to wait for Curative to turn its testing site into a vaccination site. The hope is to eventually administer 1,000 vaccines a day. The Florida Department of Emergency Management did visit this site, but according to Curative, no plans were discussed on exactly when vaccines will happen.Tthere is already an agreement between Curative and the city to administer vaccines at the site, so the main variable stalling progress is vaccine supply.Curative has been doing between 100 and 150 COVID-19 tests a day. IIAC chief outlines evolution of U.S. wealth management

One in five Canadian investors plans to switch wealth providers: EY study “Technology has transformed the financial planning exercise,” he says. “At one time it was an obligatory formal procedure, yielding little client benefit. The plan was completed, paid for, put on a shelf and often ignored. New planning technology, adapted by many firms in the industry, has brought the plan to life, and made it a dynamic and evolving planning tool, rather than a static, point-in-time document.” This improved dialogue, and broader service offerings, are helping deepen client relationships, he suggests. And, firms are investing more in training to ensure that advisors can meet all sorts of financial needs. At the same time, firms are being challenged to retain high-quality advisors, many of whom have defected from large wirehouse firms to small brokerage houses and independent shops over the past few years. “With competition for qualified experienced advisors intense, an important element in the optimal retention strategy, aside from providing the requisite products and services and technology, is effective communication on firm strategy and direction between senior management and the advisor,” he notes. For new advisors, firms are training them and then adding them to existing teams, recognizing that building a book from scratch is no longer a viable strategy. “Few new advisors can meet the required minimum client asset thresholds to compensate for allocated fixed and variable costs,” he says. So firms are focusing more on succession planning with their sales forces, in order to retain assets from retiring advisors. “The investments made in restructuring the wealth management business in the United States, at both large and small broker-dealers, has been extensive,” Russell says. “The focus has been on training and continuing education of advisors, new management practices, and new products and services. Firms have also taken advantage of advances in technology that have facilitated the delivery of financial advice and products.” This, in turn, has helped rebuild investor trust and confidence, and positioned advisors to help their clients benefit from the recent turnaround in U.S. equity markets. Canaccord reports record revenues, drops proposal to acquire RF Capital Share this article and your comments with peers on social media Facebook LinkedIn Twitter James Langton The U.S. wealth management business has evolved substantially over the past five years, becoming more technically sophisticated, client focused, and productive, says Investment Industry Association of Canada (IIAC) president and CEO, Ian Russell, in is latest letter to the industry. Russell reports that the U.S. wealth business has changed in two major ways: by creating “a new kind of dialogue with clients”, and to pursue new business strategies. “The new approach to dialogue increasingly involves a focus on more frequent and deeper conversations with clients,” he says. Advisors are more attentive to client goals and less focused on benchmark-beating performance; they utilize more straightforward language; and, leverage technology to create more useful financial planning. First Look: 2018 Volkswagen Atlas

Princess Diana’s humble little 1981 Ford Escort is up for auction An engagement gift from Prince Charles, the car is being sold by a Princess Di “superfan” Volkswagen taking on three-row SUV market with upcoming SUVBuilt on VW’s MQB platform, the Atlas has only slightly less interior space than GMC’s Acadia — putting it at No. 2 for interior space in the segment, says VW, edging out the Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder and the Honda Pilot. That would put it at just under 79 cubic feet behind the first row, and about 40 behind the second. Second- and third-row seats fold completely flat. VW says it has the best forward visibility of any other SUV and is second best behind the Pilot for rear visibility.A heated steering wheel will be available, as will be a full suite of safety features, including an around-view monitor, blind-spot monitoring, active cruise control, lane-keeping assists and park assist functions. VW also says the Atlas will be “competitively” priced for the segment, meaning it will cost less than a Touareg, but more than a Tiguan. And while it may have lost its powerhouse diesel/hybrid powertrain, it remains great looking, giving up nothing in the odyssey from sketch to genuine sheetmetal, sitting low and wide, with a big, Jeep Cherokee-eating grin and an interior the size of an army tent. The front end, in particular, looks almost identical to that concept so many of us fell for four years ago.Designed primarily for the North American market and with three rows of useable seats — the third row surprisingly accessible — the Atlas will come to Canada in late May as a 2018 model in either front- or all-wheel-drive variants. FWD versions will automatically get the turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four used in the Golf GTI, but with 238 horsepower. AWD units receive the same 3.6-litre V6 in the Touareg, with 280 horsepower and an expected 266 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s unclear if FWD models will be available with the V6. Either engine will be mated to a new eight-speed automatic with manual mode, but no DSG transmission for now. AWD Atlases will use the same 4Motion full-time Haldex system Volkswagen currently employs in other models, although the Atlas gets a dial that offers selections for all-wheel drive modes. But the real story of the Atlas is the interior. To be assembled alongside the Passat in Chattanooga, Tennessee, starting in December, the Atlas borrows some control switches from the Passat but gets a new, and very large, touchscreen infotainment screen with incredibly sharp graphics and response times. Like other VW models, trim levels will include a Trendline, Comfortline, Highline and Execline, the latter receiving a new TFT colour instrumentation screen. Other models get the attractive instruments found in the Passat.RELATED Trending in Canada advertisement SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Volkswagen‘s all new midsize SUV, officially named “Atlas,” demonstrates two tenets of concept vehicles: First, manufacturers can indeed construct attractive vehicles that stay true to the designers’ original vision; secondly, a whole lot can happen between conception and the eventual birth of the model. No one knows this better than VW, which for the past year has struggled with a US$15-billion albatross of its own creation — the diesel emissions scandal that not only forced the company to take a humbling look at itself but to halt sales of diesel vehicles and recast plans for diesel and hybrid-diesels in its upcoming cars and SUVs. Where stout, ol’-fashioned diesel was once a viable and growing alternative for consumers kicking tires on hybrid or plug-in cars, the VW emissions-cheating saga effectively killed diesel’s promise in North America, snuffing out whatever appetite existed for the fuel outside commercial use. That’s partly why we won’t see the promising diesel-hybrid drivetrain touted when the Atlas debuted in 2013 as the CrossBlue concept. Back then, much noise was made about its earth-shattering, 516 lb.-ft. of torque, delivered through the unique marriage of diesel and electricity. With beefy good looks, 37 miles per gallon on the highway and 305 horsepower, the CrossBlue concept was a darling of the 2013 North American International Auto Show. We wanted one immediately. Ontario town welcomes Low Speed Vehicles to its streets

first_imgTrending in Canada advertisement Trending Videos The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail may be the most expensive new car ever First Look: 2022 Lexus NX The sport-cute’s looks have been softened, but its powertrains and infotainment offerings have been sharpened Forget all the noise (or silence) about a Porsche Taycan Turbo S that goes from zero to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds; what we really need, according to two retired Grand Bend, Ontario businessmen Don Liley and Dave Marr, is more LSVs – that’s low speed vehicles, for the uninitiated. The electric carts are manufactured in British Columbia, and the duo decided their community would be a perfect playground for the all-electric buggies – if they could get municipal approval. Well, mission accomplished: their business got the go-ahead from local bylaw on April 13.In keeping with the parameters of the pilot project introduced by the province of Ontario in July of 2017, “LSVs are electric, environmentally friendly and efficient and must meet all the requirements of the LSV pilot.  LSV’s travel at a speed up to 40 KPH and can only be driven on roads and highways with a maximum speed limit of up to 50 KPH.  The LSV must be licensed, insured and driven by a licensed driver just like a car.” According to the rules, the vehicles cannot be tampered with to exceed that 40 km/h upper limit. RELATED News This B.C. golf cart company is now making low-speed electric cars by  Coleman Molnar  | March 14, 2021 Grand Bend, tucked in the southeast corner of Lake Huron in the municipality of Lambton Shores, recently announced it would be the first jurisdiction in Ontario to give its approval to the environmentally friendly rides. Think of it as a test program for larger towns; at the last census, Grand Bend had about 2700 residents. The vehicles are available as two-seaters or for up to six, and there is even one that looks like a little pickup. They’re darling; and though they’re being called a great alternative as a second vehicle, they’re also in the $15K to $16K range, which might be a little steep for a fair-weather grocery getter. Then again, street legal (at least in Grand Bend) is inviting, and the things will probably last forever.
