Yes because Stefano is young and has great potential,” Alberto Aquilani, who played for both clubs, told Gazzetta dello Sport.“He’s grown a lot in recent months. He reminds me of Verratti for the way he plays. A regista and mezz’ala in one? Exactly. He can carry out both roles in the middle of the park.“As a regista he has an excellent vision, even if he lacks physicality, or if you want to build a team devoted to dribbling then he’s ideal.“Stefano’s a very polite and down-to-earth guy, who has his head on his shoulders. I certainly didn’t find him, but what struck me was his attention to the advice I gave him in training.“He’d often run a bit on empty, so I suggested to him the position to occupy tactically, which would make the most of his characteristics.” last_img read more

first_imgBarcelona boss Valverde satisfied with win at Getafeby Carlos Volcanoa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveBarcelona boss Ernesto Valverde was satisfied with their 2-0 win at Getafe. It wasn’t a great performance but it was an important win. “It was important not to make mistakes early on like we have done in other games,” Valverde said. “That was fundamental. The goal calmed us down and, from there, we imposed ourselves well. We didn’t give much away and had chances to score more.”If you want to win La Liga you have to win a lot of games away from home, not just your home games. Getafe were a tough rival, it’s a hard place to come and we’ve played well. Now we have three days to prepare for Inter.” Clement Lenglet was sent off late on and, with Samuel Umtiti injured, it means Barcelona will be short in defence for the home game against Sevilla next weekend. “We have players from the B team who can help,” said Valverde, who’s likely to pair Gerard Pique with Jean Clair Todibo. Two players not on the 28-man roster, but who are expected to be part of the Gold Cup squad, are Christian Pulisic and Tyler Adams. Those two are on break after the conclusion of their Bundesliga campaigns, but are expected to join up with the U.S. team once the final Gold Cup squad is set. New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long is on the roster for the Jamaica friendly despite the hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined for two weeks. Berhalter will have a chance this week to determine whether Long can recover in time to be a factor for the Gold Cup, or if he will wind up joining John Brooks and DeAndre Yedlin on the list of injured U.S. defenders who will miss the summer tournament.   Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Tua Tagovailoa Wanted To Transfer To This School Early Last Season

(Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was the hero of the College Football Playoff title game. Just a few months earlier, he was contemplating a transfer. The five-star recruit was trapped behind incumbent starter Jalen Hurts on the Alabama depth chart. Even though he was only at the beginning of his freshman season, Tagovailoa wasn’t seeing the field much. This afternoon, during an appearance at his former interemediate school in Honolulu, Tagovailoa admitted he not only thought about transferring. He even had a place picked out.The southpaw wanted to leave Tuscaloosa for USC, according to Hawaii News Now’s Taryn Hatcher.“I called my dad and asked him if my offer to the University of Southern California was still available,” Tagovailoa told the crowd of seventh and eighth graders. “I wanted to leave. I told my dad I wanted to go to a school where I thought it’d be easier for me and wouldn’t challenge me so much.”The former Crusader went on to tell the students that this particular conversation with his father took place early in his time in Tuscaloosa – and that it actually landed him in hot water with his family. He said his parents told him he had to push through, and he knew they were right.Luckily, Tagovailoa stayed put, and he ended up helping Alabama in the biggest spot of all. He relieved an ineffective Hurts at halftime of the national championship game against Georgia and threw three touchdown passes, including the game-winner to Devonta Smith in overtime.Tagovailoa’s performance appeared to put him in the driver’s seat to win the starting job this off-season, but Nick Saban has yet to make a decision. That hasn’t stopped some pundits from declaring him one of the top signal callers in the nation and a Heisman Trophy candidate. What a different a year makes.last_img read more

ESPN Predicts The Winners Big Ten Quarterback Battles

first_imgA general view of Memorial Stadium during a game between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Wyoming Cowboys.LINCOLN, NE – SEPTEMBER 10: A general view of Memorial Stadium during a game between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Wyoming Cowboys on September 10, 2016 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Nebraska defeated Wyoming 52-14. (Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images)Overall, the Big Ten quarterback situations are pretty settled. There are situations like Michigan, where a starter hasn’t been named, but we’re all extremely confident that Shea Patterson will win it. ESPN has broken down the top Big Ten quarterback battles that continue to rage on.Ohio State’s is just about wrapped up. There was some drama while Joe Burrow was still on the roster. He was the Buckeyes quarterback with the most experience within Urban Meyer’s system.Burrow recently elected to transfer after graduating from Ohio State. He will now battle for the starting job at LSU.That leaves Dwayne Haskins, who impressed last season in spot duty, and freshman Tate Martell. Most view Haskins as the strong favorite.ESPN’s Mitch Sherman agrees with that take on Ohio State’s quarterback battle.Sherman actually goes as far as to drop Haskins as a potential surprise Heisman name to watch. From ESPN:No doubt it’s Haskins, already viewed as a Heisman Trophy candidate after he threw for 565 yards and four touchdowns last season and led a comeback win at Michigan in place of injured starter J.T. Barrett. The other team listed may not have the championship aspirations as Ohio State. However, there is a bit more drama with the quarterback battle.A number of players are vying for the Nebraska quarterback job, most notably Tristan Gebbia, Adrian Martinez, Andrew Bunch, and Noah Vedral. Bunch is a walk-on, and Vedral will likely have to sit out this fall, if he doesn’t receive a waiver, after following head coach Scott Frost from UCF.Sherman goes with Martinez, a true freshman, over redshirt frosh Gebbia. From his write-up:Long term, it’s Martinez, vying to become the first true freshman starter at Nebraska since Tommie Frazier in 1992. He fits the Frost system and brings great intangibles. This one can definitely go either way. No matter what happens, Nebraska fans should have some serious renewed excitement this fall.[ESPN]last_img read more

ESPN Reveals ‘Early Impression’ Of Baker Mayfield In NFL

first_imgNFL Commissioner Roger Goodell walks past a video board displaying an image of Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma after he was picked #1 overall by the Cleveland Browns.ARLINGTON, TX – APRIL 26: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell walks past a video board displaying an image of Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma after he was picked #1 overall by the Cleveland Browns during the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft at AT&T Stadium on April 26, 2018 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)The Browns are expecting a lot out of Baker Mayfield. That’s what happens when you make someone the No. 1 overall pick. The major question is when do they believe Mayfield will begin fulfilling expectations. Often times, No. 1 picks start right away for their teams, but that might not be the case for Mayfield.Cleveland did sign Tyrod Taylor in the offseason, and the Browns are looking to show as much improvement as possible after going a mind-boggling 1-31 the last two years. They might not be able to show as much progress being led by a rookie QB. Therefore, Mayfield may have to wait his turn.ESPN’s Pat McManamon, who covers the Browns, was asked for his “early impression” of Mayfield. His answer illustrates the decision the Browns must make. The Browns don’t want Mayfield to start this season and are giving Tyrod Taylor the starter’s reps. That’s as it should be given the plan, and given Mayfield has a long way to go in learning the NFL game, speed and fundamentals. Status: Too soon to tell.If we had to guess, Taylor will start the season but while Cleveland should win some games in 2018, they probably aren’t a playoff team.Once they begin to falter and fall out of contention, the job will likely go to Mayfield. The franchise must find out what they have in him as soon as they can. He’ll be the starter in Cleveland, it is just a matter of when.last_img read more

Sam Hartman hasn’t been consistent under center, but his performance last weekend was phenomenal. Will Trevor Lawrence or Chase Brice get the start at QB for Clemson on Saturday? The Tigers are only 1-4 ATS this season despite being 5-0 SU, while Wake Forest has covered the spread the last 4 times these teams met.https://t.co/IKfrzNlUnx— OddsShark (@OddsShark) October 1, 2018Date: Saturday, October 6Game Time: 3:30 PM ETChannel: ESPNAnnouncers: Beth Mowins, Anthony Becht, Rocky BoimanPrediction: Lawrence might not be 100 percent for this ACC showdown, but Wake Forest’s defense is vulnerable against the pass.
