Resilient Steelers bounce back _ again

(AP Photo/Frank Victores)PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers are good again. For a week anyway.Yet if one of the NFL’s most enigmatic teams has learned anything over the last three months, it’s that stringing success from one Sunday to the next remains tricky. This week’s season-salvaging triumph is next week’s gut-punch loss. Thirteen weeks into an equally parts promising and puzzling season, Pittsburgh finally insists it’s ready to stop running in place.“I feel like this time of the year, you’re not allowed to have those slip-ups anymore,” linebacker Arthur Moats said. “If we want to be a team like we’re trying to be, we have to be successful this week.”Good luck with that. A trip to Atlanta is the only thing between the Steelers (8-5) and a two-game homestand against Kansas City and the Bengals that will determine whether they make it back to the playoffs for the first time since 2011. Three wins and Pittsburgh captures the AFC North. Two and a return to January football is likely. Anything less — and the Steelers will almost certainly be favored in all three games — and another long offseason awaits. The math is simple. Breaking a pattern in which the Steelers have mixed euphoric wins against contenders to confounding losses to also-rans is not.Maybe that’s why dozens of players showed up at the team facility on Monday even though coach Mike Tomlin gave them the day off.“The actions on your off days speak a lot about you,” Moats said.Moats spent the first four seasons of his career in Buffalo, admitting “during my first two or three years there, going into the bye week, you pretty much knew it was over.”Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell (26) scores on a 10-yard touchdown reception against Cincinnati Bengals outside linebacker Emmanuel Lamur (59) during the second half of an NFL football game Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014 in Cincinnati. (AP Photo/Michael Conroy)Not this time. As uneven as Pittsburgh has been this fall, when the Steelers are on they are every bit as explosive as New England or Denver. The problem is what happens when quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and stars Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown are off.Pittsburgh is on pace to set a club record for points in a season, needing to average just 19 points over the final three weeks to eclipse the 416 scored by the 1979 team that won the franchise’s fourth Super Bowl in season years. That club went 12-4 and won eight games by at least 11 points. The current group only has three blowouts under its belt, and while the romp over the Bengals qualifies, the Steelers still entered the fourth quarter trailing before scoring four times in less than 10 minutes.“I don’t care about the style points,” coach Mike Tomlin said. “We’re just trying to do what is necessary to get out of these stadiums with wins.”Of course, Tomlin would like to do it with some consistency. And while the Chiefs and Bengals will almost certainly have Pittsburgh’s attention on the final two weekends of the season, who knows what awaits in Atlanta. The Falcons are under .500 but in first place in the NFC South. The last time the Steelers faced a team like that, New Orleans blew them off the field. It’s why Moats, at best, is cautiously optimistic. He’s not the only player trying to make the postseason for the first time in his career. It can be a painful learning process. Truth is, the losses to Tampa Bay, the New York Jets and New Orleans didn’t seem as crushing in the moment. Any similar missteps here on out and the repercussions will extend into a murky future.“If you lose a game now, you’re talking about losing the division, missing the playoffs,” Moats said.He welcomes the pressure while allowing the defense needs to improve. Moats’ fourth-quarter fumble recovery kickstarted Pittsburgh’s late surge, one that was required after the Bengals spent three quarters popping one big play after the next.  When it mattered, however, the Steelers shut the door. The win allowed Moats to check his phone in the giddy aftermath to see how the rest of the AFC contenders fared. It beats the alternative, though the veterans in the locker room know it’s best to focus on their own games. Win games and what everyone else does hardly matters.“Every week is kind of a playoff week for us,” Roethlisberger said. “We’re going to give it everything we have every week. And it doesn’t get any easier moving forward.”Something the Steelers know only too well.Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (7) throws a 94-yard touchdown pass to Martavis Bryant during the second half of an NFL football game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014 in Cincinnati. Shane Keegan adds Ciaran Nugent and Conor Winn to his squad for 2017

first_imgGalway United are delighted to announce that goalkeepers Ciaran Nugent and Conor Winn have signed for 2017.The duo will vie for the number one spot at Eamonn Deacy Park in 2017.Twenty five-year-old Ciaran Nugent joins Galway United from Sligo Rovers. The American played his college football with Lehigh Mountain Hawks and later Harrisburg City Islanders in the United Soccer League. In 2016, Nugent had had to bide his time at the Showgrounds. An injury to Micheál Schlingermann saw the Massachusetts native start the final seven League games of the season and Nugent kept six clean sheets in seven impressive outings for the Bit o’ Red.Nugent arrived in Ireland on Monday morning and he trained with his new teammates for the first time.Upon putting pen to paper, Nugent said: “Coming in at Sligo Rovers and playing like I did helped showcase myself. Now I’m coming to Galway United to help the team to do well in the League.“If I can do well, hopefully my teammates can do well also and we can take the club right up the League table.“I’ve heard a lot of good things from other players around the League about the squad and Galway.“I’m excited to move to a club with aspirations of doing well this year.”Conor Winn has extended his stay at Eamonn Deacy Park. The 6’6 goalkeeper made 26 appearances for United in 2016.Winn, 24, who previously lined out for Shamrock Rovers, Dundalk and Finn Harps, is coming into his sixth season with Galway United, having made 63 appearances in total for the Tribesmen.Winn welcomes the competition that Ciaran Nugent will provide in the coming season.“I’m happy to be back with my hometown club,” Winn explained.“We’re really looking to push on this year, we don’t want to be scrapping near the bottom.“We want to push on and finish in the top six and aim for Europe. I think we’re good enough to achieve that and I’m really looking forward to it.“We’ve got a new goalkeeper in Ciaran Nugent, so I’m looking forward to the competition. It’s going to be a big pre-season, whoever comes out on top will play.“I’m sure we’ll support each other. I’m looking forward to it, competition is healthy and we have that all over the pitch this year.”Shane Keegan is pleased to have serious competition between the posts now after making his two latest additions to his squad.“I’m delighted to get Conor Winn back in.“By his own admission, Conor probably didn’t have as strong a season as he would’ve liked last year. Look back to the season before that, he had a fantastic year. He’s determined to get back to his best.“By bringing in Ciaran Nugent, who impressed so much with Sligo Rovers at the tail end of last year, it then means that Conor knows he has a fight on his hands. The two players know they’re going to be fighting tooth and nail over pre-season to see which one of them can stick their hand up.“Between the two of them, I think we’ve got two really strong goalkeepers, who will push one another all the way and hopefully we will be very good in that department this year.”print WhatsApp Facebook Twitter Emaillast_img read more

Home Depot takes nearly $2 billion less

first_imgBy the time Home Depot’s board reached its agreement, some of Wall Street’s most powerful executives had stepped in to personally negotiate. James Dimon, chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, pulled almost three all-nighters, ordering in pizza with his most junior staff members; Richard S. Fuld Jr., Lehman Brothers’ chief executive, was sending e-mail messages from his BlackBerry at 5a.m.; and E. Stanley O’Neal, chief executive of Merrill Lynch, was taking calls on the golf course, against his club’s rules. Kenneth D. Langone, Home Depot’s chairman and a fixture on Wall Street, found himself uncharacteristically locking horns with some of his best friends. And even Jack Welch, the former General Electric chief executive, was brought in by his client, Clayton Dubilier. As part of the transaction, each private equity firm increased the amount of equity that it will commit to the deal by $150 million, to $800 million. In a major concession to the banks, Home Depot has committed to finance $1billion of debt and take up to 12.5percent of the equity in the supply company. Housing market blamed What has emerged is a tale of bare-knuckled brinksmanship, as the three private equity buyers – Bain, Carlyle and Clayton Dubilier – initially demanded concessions from Home Depot. In announcing the possible repricing of the sale earlier this month, Home Depot said it would trim the price it was offering in a stock buyback, initially worth about $250 million. Even so, the buyout firms threatened to walk away from the deal, declaring that the housing market’s decline had created what is known as a material adverse change. Such clauses are commonplace in deals, allowing for buyers to walk away. In Home Depot’s agreement, however, it was not clear whether the declines in the housing and credit markets qualified as deal breakers. Still, Home Depot buckled and agreed to lower the price to about $9billion. Then the three investment banks demanded a better deal as well, setting off a marathon of conference calls as the banks threatened to walk away from their financing commitments. By balking at financing the transaction, Lehman Brothers put itself in an especially difficult position. One of Lehman’s most senior bankers, Andrew Taussig, had advised Home Depot on the sale at the same time that it was also providing financing to the buying group. Suddenly, Lehman was turning around and threatening to scuttle a deal it had advised one of its bluest chip clients to accept. Fuld, Lehman’s chief executive, spent hours in person and on the phone with Home Depot’s management and some of its directors trying to explain the firm’s position. Taussig was mortified, people briefed on the negotiations said. Because of Lehman’s conflicted position, Goldman Sachs was brought in as Home Depot’s new adviser to try to mediate among the private equity firms and other banks. Banks fear buyout debt During the past two years, banks have climbed over one another to lend billions of dollars to private equity firms as they have swept up an unprecedented number of companies. To recoup their capital, banks resold the debt as high-yield bonds and loans in the credit markets. But when the credit markets froze because of the implosion of the subprime mortgage market, investors started refusing to buy nearly all forms of debt not backed by the federal government. Banks such as JPMorgan, Merrill Lynch and Lehman have become afraid that they would be left holding the bag on more than $300 billion in buyout-related debt this year. Another potential victim of the Home Depot deal is stapled financing, the practice of advising the seller while lending to the buyers. Though the practice has become almost routine in recent years, it is riddled with conflicts and may soon fall out of favor, some bankers have predicted. Still, by reaching an agreement, Home Depot, the private equity firms and the banks may have saved themselves from a potentially worse fate: years of contentious lawsuits.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! Wall Street has been abuzz in recent weeks about what the market turmoil might mean for several other large deals, including the $45 billion buyout of the Texas energy company TXU, that are supposed to be completed in the next two months. Big players involved The Home Depot deal involves some of Wall Street’s biggest players. The buying consortium included the Carlyle Group, Bain Capital and Clayton Dubilier & Rice, and the banks financing the deal include Lehman Brothers, JPMorgan Chase and Merrill Lynch. The reworked transaction raised the curtain on the complicated relationships between investment banks and some of their biggest clients, the private equity firms who annually shower them with billions of dollars in fees. In the Home Depot negotiations, however, those normally chummy relationships quickly turned icy cold, as all the players eventually demanded heavy concessions from one another. Home Depot was forced to drop the sale price of its commercial supply business by nearly $2 billion on Sunday, according to people involved in the negotiations, one of the first big buyouts to be renegotiated as a result of the recent credit squeeze. The renegotiated deal, which cut the sale price roughly 18 percent, to $8.5 billion, could lead to reconsideration of some other large buyouts that are pending and are worth nearly $400 billion collectively. Such turmoil is likely to leave the Wall Street banks that backed those deals stuck with billions in loans that cannot be resold. In cutting the price of the deal, Home Depot might have created a template for other buyout firms to drag sellers back to the negotiating table. It also could bring an end to the two-year buyout boom, which was fueled by cheap credit. Home Depot’s board approved the deal in principle during a meeting on Sunday afternoon, people involved in the negotiations said. Home Depot’s board is planning to reconvene early today to complete the details of the agreement, which is tentative and could still collapse. last_img read more

Rodgers: Friday fixture ‘not ideal’ after international break

first_img“It’s been a mixture of some rest [for the players who weren’t away] and some have been working,” he said.“Obviously we’ve had a really busy schedule so for the players that have had the opportunity to recover a little it was very beneficial for them. “At the same time they’ve worked hard on aspects of their game that we think individually they can improve on and they’re now getting ready for the next batch of games from now through until December.“We still have a couple more that will come back tomorrow. Tom Rogic and Emilio Izaguirre will be back tomorrow.“Christian Gamboa came back a bit early. He wasn’t able to play in the second game because of a yellow card so we got him back as quick as we could.” PAThe Celtic manager was also asked about a potential move for Steven Gerrard, who has drawn a line under his time at LA Galaxy. The former England and Liverpool star worked with Rodgers at Anfield and bookmakers have made Celtic the favourites to be his next club.“I never speculate or speak about players coming into the club,” the Celtic manager said. “I never have done and don’t intend to start now – that will always remain private. “The only thing I would say with regards to Steven, he has been an incredible player. I had him for a number of years at Liverpool and he was absolutely brilliant with me. “As a young manager going into such a great club, having the captain and real senior player there, to be able to work closely together with him and learn about the club and work together on the field was fantastic. “He decided to go to America and I’m sure he has had a good spell there. Steven will sit down now and come back and decide what he wants to do. “In terms of the speculation, I’m not sure where it’s come from. But players coming into the club will always remain private.” Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers says the scheduling of their match against Kilmarnock after an international break is “not ideal”.The match at Rugby Park was moved to a 7.45pm kick-off on Friday night for television but two of Celtic’s players will not even return from playing for their countries until earlier that day.Rodgers felt that with Celtic having more players on international duty than any other Premiership team the scheduling affected his side adversely.“It’s obviously something that isn’t ideal,” he said. “I think if you look we had 14 players away over this break so you’ve got over 50% of your squad who are away. “I would only assume that we have probably the most international players that have been away on duty from up here in Scotland. But we’re the team that’s playing on the Friday. “It obviously means I’ll have to have a look at the team and the setup and the fitness of the players. So it’s not ideal preparation.“They never usually are on the back of an international break anyway but certainly [with a Saturday match] we would have had an extra day that would have benefited us greatly.”The Celtic boss spent part of the break taking in games but for players who were not required to travel a mixture of rest and individually tailored training was prescribed.last_img read more

Report: Community Platforms Market Led by Jive Software and Telligent

first_imgRelated Posts 3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo… Tags:#enterprise richard macmanus Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of… Forrester singled out 2 vendors that are particularly strong: Jive Software and Telligent. The report noted that both have platforms that are easy to deploy and use. Jive SoftwareJive Software has a large customer base of more than 2,500 customers, including brands like Intel, Kraft Foods, and Nike. The report noted that Jive’s user interface was “intuitive”.ReadWriteWeb has profiled Portland-based Jive Software a couple of times recently. Last April we reported on Jive’s enterprise collaboration suite Clearspace. We noted that the service takes on Microsoft’s Sharepoint with a feature set that looks like something many consumer software users would be envious of. At the time we thought that a USAToday quote was particularly apt: “Jive Software wants to be the Apple Computer of corporate social networks.” In July 2008, we reported on ClearStep – an online community for businesses that we thought could deliver very real value to potential Jive customers. We’ve also commented favorably in the recent past about Jive’s promotion of XMPP (called Jabber in IM) – for powering communication services hosted in the cloud. The company included the first XMPP-powered document sharing and collaboration tool in the 2.0 release of its Clearspace.Telligent Dallas-based Telligent was commended by Forrester for its analytics features, because they “empower marketers to understand what’s going on in their branded communities.” Back in June, ReadWriteWeb noted that Telligent was one of a number of companies to offer integration with Microsoft SharePoint – perhaps the most-used collaboration platform in the enterprise. We noted that Telligent’s Community Server Evolution platform uses its REST API, mail gateway, shared authentication and single sign-on, to integrate with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, and Microsoft Active Directory. Over on Jobwire, ReadWriteWeb’s channel dedicated to news about job hires in the tech and media industry, we’ve also picked up on a couple of recent hires at Telligent. In November it hired former Microsoft Senior Research Sociologist Marc Smith, then in December it appointed former Palm CEO Carl Yankowski to its board of directors. So things appear to be going well for Telligent, even in the current economy.ConclusionOne of the report’s findings is that community platform providers must do more than offer a technology platform. Indeed Jeremiah Owyang says that “the technology is a commodity.” The top providers, according to Forrester, “not only offer a strong technology platform but also provide services, support, and analytics offerings.” Owyang elaborated that companies want “a solutions vendor that delivers strategy, education, services, community management, analytics and support – beyond just rss and discussion boards.”What the report didn’t address was how relatively small vendors such as Jive and Telligent are competing against the likes of Microsoft SharePoint, IBM’s Lotus SameTime and Lotus Connections, and even the open source software Drupal – which is very popular with developers in the enterprise. Check out Dion Hinchcliffe’s top 10 list of community platforms for other options.Update: Jeremiah Owyang notes in the comments to this post: “Some of the vendors you mention actually don’t fit the use case that I was writing for: which is external communities for the interactive marketer — NOT the internal intranet. Also, it’s important to note that there is a clear difference between community software and collaboration software — they are two different use cases.” See also Jeremiah’s blog post. It’s very hard to see how the enterprise community platform market can support 90 vendors, but we’re pleased to see that innovative smaller companies like Jive and Telligent are footing it with the bigcos in this competitive landscape. Now please tell us which community platforms you use in your company and/or which ones have impressed you recently. IT + Project Management: A Love Affair Forrester released a report today about the ‘community platforms’ market. They evaluated nine vendors, concluding that Jive Software and Telligent Systems “lead the pack because of their strong administrative and platform features.” KickApps and Pluck were also commended, for enabling large Web sites to scale quickly with social features. Awareness, Lithium Technologies, and Mzinga were other products that Forrester liked, for enabling companies to build branded communities. We summarize the report below and highlight our own past coverage of Jive Software and Telligent.Communities have been a staple of the web 2.0 era and over the past few years a lot of enterprise community products have come onto the market. The Forrester report, authored by Jeremiah Owyang, notes that even in this down economy there is still demand for online community platforms – because they are a cost-effective way for companies to market their products and reduce support costs. Overall, Forrester identified more than 90 vendors who offer community platforms and services – although Owyang notes that it’s “still a very young market”. 9 of the 90-odd were profiled in the report. They were: Awareness, Jive, KickApps, Leverage, Lithium, LiveWorld, Mzinga, Pluck, and Telligent.last_img read more
