first_imgBarcelona boss Valverde satisfied with win at Getafeby Carlos Volcanoa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveBarcelona boss Ernesto Valverde was satisfied with their 2-0 win at Getafe. It wasn’t a great performance but it was an important win. “It was important not to make mistakes early on like we have done in other games,” Valverde said. “That was fundamental. The goal calmed us down and, from there, we imposed ourselves well. We didn’t give much away and had chances to score more.”If you want to win La Liga you have to win a lot of games away from home, not just your home games. Getafe were a tough rival, it’s a hard place to come and we’ve played well. Now we have three days to prepare for Inter.” Clement Lenglet was sent off late on and, with Samuel Umtiti injured, it means Barcelona will be short in defence for the home game against Sevilla next weekend. “We have players from the B team who can help,” said Valverde, who’s likely to pair Gerard Pique with Jean Clair Todibo. Bdesh cricketers escape shooting attack in NZ mosque tour called off

first_imgChristchurch: The Bangladesh cricket team escaped unhurt despite being in close vicinity of a shooting attack on a mosque here but its ongoing tour of New Zealand was called off owing to the “unprecedented act of violence” in which 49 people were killed. The attack took place on two mosques in the city and also injured more than 20 people, according to the police. The Bangladesh team, which was about to enter the Al Noor mosque in Hagley Park to offer prayers, escaped unscathed but the situation led to the authorities calling off the third and final Test match starting Saturday. The match was the tour finale for the visitors. Also Read – Andy Murray to make Grand Slam return at Australian Open”We are very thankful that we weren’t caught in the crossfire, but what we saw was straight out of a movie scene. We could see bloodstained people staggering out of the mosque,” Bangladesh team manager Khaled Mashud told reporters here. “Maybe for about eight-ten minutes, we were all inside the bus and were sitting with our heads bowed, just in case someone fires at us,” he added. The team’s Indian Performance analyst Shrinivas Chandrasekeran, a Mumbai-based computer-engineer-turned-cricket-analyst, was there in the bus at the time of the incident. The side’s spin consultant Sunil Joshi, also an Indian, was however at the team hotel. Also Read – Fast bowler Behrendorff to undergo spinal surgery”We couldn’t react initially. In such a horror situation, your brain automatically freezes as you are terrified. That’s exactly what happened to all of us,” Chandrasekaran, who has been with the team for the past one year, said. On being contacted, Joshi said, “I am safe, I will be back in India on Wednesday next week. I cannot talk on the incident right now.” New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the incident marked “one of New Zealand’s darkest days” “It is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack,” Ardern said. Bangladesh’s senior opener Tamim Iqbal said it was a frightening experience for the team. “…please keep us in your prayers,” he tweeted. Ardern issued a strong statement condemning the attack. “This is significant and I can tell you now this is and will be one of New Zealand’s darkest days. I would describe it as an unprecedented act of violence, an act that has absolutely no place in New Zealand. This is not who we are,” she said. “Certainly it has occurred at a place where people should have been expressing their religious freedom, where they should have been in a safe environment, and they have not been today. There is no place in New Zealand for such extreme acts of unprecedented violence. “The people who were the subject of this attack today, New Zealand is their home, they should be safe here. The person who has perpetuated this violent act against them, they have no place in New Zealand society,” she added. The players were initially barred from leaving the bus but, after several minutes, disembarked and made their way through to the Hagley Park ground. They later went back to the hotel. The bus carried 17 members of the team with Liton Das, Nayeem Hasam and spin bowling consultant Joshi staying back at the hotel. Mashud said the players are bound to be affected after escaping death by a whisker.last_img read more

Morocco begins emptying beached oil tanker

first_imgRABAT – Morocco has launched an operation to empty an oil tanker that ran aground during a storm near the southern port of Tan Tan with 5,000 tonnes of fuel on board, an official said. The fuel was being pumped into trucks, with the operation to last between five and seven days depending on the weather, M’Hammed Atmani, police chief at the national ports agency, was quoted as saying by the official MAP news agency late on Tuesday. The ship was travelling from the Canary Islands when it ran aground last week, with heavy waves dragging it towards a rocky area, sparking fears of an oil slick on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. No major leaks from the ship have been reported, with a source at the environment ministry saying the cold sea temperatures had thickened the fuel, reducing the risk of any leakage.Rabat had dispatched tug boats and appealed to Spain for assistance in refloating the tanker, but the rescue efforts were unsuccessful. The fuel was being transported to a power station in Tan Tan, which lies close to the Western Sahara, around 300 kilometres (190 miles) south of the Moroccan resort town of Agadir.last_img read more

Berner Stepping Down From MPA

first_imgThe MPA, in a release announcing the one-year anniversary of its Magazine Media 360 report, buries the real lede—that president and CEO Mary Berner is stepping down after three years.  In her three years at the MPA, Berner managed to shift the conversation away from using print advertising as a defining performance metric for the magazine industry. Instead, the Magazine Media 360 Brand Audience report has been a key tool for repositioning magazine media as a cross-platform—and growing—market.  “In her role as president and CEO of MPA, Mary and the board marshalled the resources of an entire industry to transform how it is perceived during a time of massive disruption brought about by the digital explosion,” says Steve Lacy, chairman, MPA board of directors, and chairman and chief executive officer, Meredith Corporation in a statement. “She leaves us having strongly positioned MPA to continue to execute our long-term plan.” In the meantime, the MPA executive committee will begin a search for Berner’s successor. center_img Berner, who’s leaving to become CEO of Cumulus Media on October 13, will be temporarily replaced by MPA’s senior vice president of marketing and digital initiatives Nancy Telliho. TikTok adds online safety videos and comment filters to its app

first_img Now playing: Watch this: TikTok Popular video and livestreaming app TikTok, which has reportedly reached more than 1 billion downloads, is facing some criticism over user security. To try to make the lip-synching app safer, TikTok launched a new educational video series Wednesday called “You’re in Control.” The series puts safety guidelines in videos instead of in text. In a blog post, TikTok said the videos are meant to entertain as well as educate.Topics covered by the videos include the site’s community guidelines and how to do things like set up a private account, establish screen time limits, enable restricted viewing, and put messaging and comment controls in place. TikTok’s new comment controls let you filter comments by keywords. Users can filter almost any keyword they want, blocking comments about race, religion, gender, politics and more.On Wednesday, TikTok paid $5.7 million in a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC had alleged that the app violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by collecting personal information on kids under 13 without parental consent. Earlier this week, the UK’s National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children called out TikTok and other livestreaming apps, saying they’re a “hunting ground” for predators. Last December, TikTok came under fire for allowing the creation and distribution of neo-Nazi propaganda. TikTok said at the time that hate speech is forbidden on the platform and that it cancels accounts that violate its rules.
